IPL Hair Removal & ingrown hairs

IPL HAIR REMOVAL

WHAT IS IPL?

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is a highly effective means of permanent hair reduction by destroying the hair bulb using heat from light that targets the pigment (colour) in the hair follicle.

WHY SHOULD I DO LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

For both males and females IPL hair removal means no more in-grown hairs from waxing or shaving cuts! No more last minute waxing before getting into your bikini!

IS IT SAFE?

IPL hair removal is safe when delivered responsibly. It is an easy, painless and quick solution to unwanted hair and can be successfully used on the body or the face. Although repeated treatments are necessary the risk of side effects or skin damage is minimised due to the selective filtering of harmful light frequencies during application. During a course of 4- 6 treatments, exposure to sun should be minimised.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

All areas of the face, (lip, chin, sides & cheeks) and body can be treated if hair is dark. Even sensitive areas, such as the bikini line, chest, back are treated quickly and relatively pain-free. As the light technology targets the pigmentation in the hair, the darker your hair & lighter the surrounding skin, the more effective it will be. You can still be treated if you have light hair or dark skin, but you will most likely need a greater number of treatments. The treatment (as with all IPLs) is fairly ineffective on grey or white hair.

Women most commonly seek to remove hair from their bikini, under arms, legs and face, while many men wish to thin or eradicate hair from their chest, back, stomach, neck and genitals.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE & HOW DOES IT WORK?

A wavelength of light heats the melanin (colour) in the base of the hair follicle, permanently destroying the hair bulb. The feeder blood vessels to the hair bulb are also destroyed.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

It can take between 15-60 minutes per session, depending on the size of the area targeted. You will need 4-8 sessions over 12 months due to hair growth stages.

IS IT REALLY PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL?

No laser clinic can claim 100 per cent permanency, as some hair will always strive to grow back. Re-growth is affected by hormones and other biological factors which vary from person to person. Laser hair removal on teenagers may often require re-treatment in later years but most teenagers still feel they have had significant benefit despite this.

For those seeking permanent laser hair removal the goal of the treatment is to destroy the hair root and damage the cells enough so that it is impossible for another hair to grow from the follicle. In order to achieve this, a number of treatments will be required over a period of time. Where regrowth occurs the hair is usually much finer than the original growth and can be maintained with one treatment every six months.

PRE AND POST CARE

HOW CAN I PREPARE?

Consultation: Book your appointment for a 30 minute consultation where we will perform a patch test and book your first appointment and discuss costs and after care for the course of your treatments. At the consultation best to have some hair growth in the area we are treating so we can see the density & colour. See below what is covered during a consultation.

First Treatment: You can leave some hair so we can see the density and colour but the majority of the hair should be shaved, (not waxed or plucked) before treatment. The hair bulb should not be removed so shaving is ok . Avoid sun exposure & tanning (using sun, solarium or fake tan) for 4-6 weeks priorto treatment as this increases melanin production under the skin which may attract more heat from the light, as darker skin is more difficult to treat. And don't pluck, wax or use electrolysis or a depiliatory cream for at least 4-6 weeks before.

What should I do post treatment?

For the first 24 hours, avoid sun, hot baths or showers, exercise, exfoliation and tight clothing as these irritate the area. Your hair should not be waxed or tweezed during the treatment period as this encourages hair growth and strength. But you may shave, bleach or trim the area.

HOW LONG WILL THE AREA TAKE TO RECOVER?

Recovery is immediate or overnight, depending on the size and location of the treatment. The area may be a little red for a few hours but can be calmed down with Laser Aid, cooling gel, or ice pack that we apply.

The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type. Side effects, if any, are minor and may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which is a sign that the follicle has responded to the treatment. Most people return to normal activity right away. We'd be more than happy to tell you more about your treatment, possible side effects and what results you can expect during your consultation.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Hair reduction is permanent so long as the procedure is performed correctly, by avoiding sun exposure, and all growth stages are treated at appropriate stages. The qualified IPL and Laser Safety Officers at Cullen Bay Day Spa can ensure you get the best results.
